In the midst of HSBC’s scandalous worldwide fiscal big thefts : throw a glance here at a map concerning African clients in « FINANCE » and worldwide clients of the bank. This is a gigantic octopus. Clearly.
I first met Russ Feingold in the 1990s, back when I was teaching in law school. The big banks and credit card companies were trying to peddle a terrible bankruptcy bill in the Senate, and I was looking for help to stop it.
It’s not always easy to find people willing to stand up to big financial companies in Washington. Looking back, I imagine Russ probably could have used the hefty campaign contributions he would have gotten from the banking industry if he had ignored my calls.
But that didn’t matter to Russ. Even when the odds were against us, Russ joined the fight to stop that terrible bill — and he didn’t just passively sign on; he threw himself into the fight with energy and enthusiasm. He did it because it was the right thing to do.
When Russ Feingold started Progressives United four years ago, I knew he’d keep taking on the big fights. So it’s no surprise that today, Progressives United is one of the strongest grassroots organizations we have to give working families a voice in our political system.
This weekend is Progressives United’s fourth birthday, and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate than to fight for Russ Feingold’s vision of a more progressive America. If you can, please donate now to help Progressives United raise $50,000 to get ready for the next big fights coming our way.
Russ saw the rigged system. In the four years since he left the United States Senate, Washington has been rigged more and more for the millionaires, billionaires, and giant corporations. The Citizens United and McCutcheon decisions put our democracy up for sale. Hobby Lobby was a corporate assault on women’s rights.
Now more than ever, if we want to change things, we have to fight for it ourselves.
That’s why we need Progressives United:
- To bring grassroots progressives together to protect programs like Medicare and Social Security that help the middle class:
- To hold our leaders accountable when they sell out to Wall Street banks and Big Oil; and
- To take back our democracy from the Koch brothers and their billionaire pals and help elect strong progressives who fight for working families.
Even though Russ is off doing terrific diplomatic work for the State Department in Africa right now, I know how proud he is of the organization he’s built and the grassroots work you’re doing. Every voice that speaks out is important.
We need the principles that Russ fought for in Washington more than ever today. No matter where Progressives United goes next, let’s make sure we’re ready to fight for the people and causes we believe in.
Thank you for being a part of this,
Sen. Elizabeth Warren
